How to report a pothole

Published: 13 April 2026

Step-by-step guide for residents

1. Report the pothole first
Use the Cambridgeshire County Council reporting system:
https://highwaysreporting.cambridgeshire.gov.uk
This creates a reference number which helps support any claim.

2. Take photos and record details
Residents should take photos of:
• the pothole
• the surrounding road
• the damage to their vehicle

It is also helpful to record the exact location, date and time of the incident.

3. Keep relevant documents
For a claim they may need:
• repair receipts or estimates
• MOT certificate
• insurance certificate
• driving licence
• vehicle logbook

4. Submit a claim
Residents need to complete the Public Liability Claim Form and send it with their evidence to:
SharedInsuranceClaims@westnorthants.gov.uk

5. Investigation
The council will investigate the claim and usually provide a decision within around 90 days.

I’ve attached a short visual guide which may also be useful to share locally.
If residents report potholes as soon as they see them it helps the highways team prioritize repairs and reduces the risk of further damage.
